You Have Questions? We Have Answers.
What exactly is the Honors Curriculum?
The Honors curriculum serves students who plan to go into professional life through demanding undergraduate and graduate programs in competitive colleges and universities. Honors prepares its graduates to succeed at their transfer institutions by training them to excel in their mastery of intertextual interpretation and to understand the role of theory in academics, including knowledge of a range of standard theoretical orientations in the Liberal Arts. Honors courses stress practice in formal academic presentation in both speaking and writing, and practice in the conventions of academic discourse and behavior.
The Honors curriculum is designed to encourage students to be self-reflective about their own intellectual processes and to become more aware of the requirements of different academic discourses in the humanities and social sciences. The courses required in the Honors curriculum are designed to be transferable to other colleges and universities.
To put it another way, students in Honors get good practice in reading, writing, listening and speaking. From that practice, successful Honors students move on to and are able to compete at the four-year colleges and universities to which they transfer.
When does the Honors Curriculum begin?
Honors semesters run in the Spring and Fall semesters.
Is the tuition the same?
Yes. You settle payment just like other courses at the College.
Can I register for classes online or with a College advisor?
Honors is a select program, therefore it requires an interview an approval from the Chair, therefore a student may not register online or at traditional registration. An information is the best place to begin.
Can I just take one Honors class to see if it's for me?
Sorry, Honors courses are NEVER offered as single courses. All Honors courses are offered in groups of five (full-time) or pairs (part-time) called "blocks."
What exactly is a block?
A block is a set of courses that are linked together and taught by a team of professors who work together to provide a richer classroom experience. Honors courses are always in blocks. Students enrolled full-time will be registered for a 15 credit block of courses. We offer two full-time block schedules: morning and afternoon five days a week.
When and where do the courses run?
The courses run only on Main Campus on Spring Garden Street. There are no online or evening courses at this time. The full-time program schedule starts at 10:30 AM and ends by 1:30. The part-time courses run variously during normal day hours.
Are there any part-time courses?
Yes. Students interested in part-time courses can get registered into a 6 credit block.
Who is eligible?
Any student in good-standing as a student at the College is eligible. For new CCP students to be eligible to join Honors, they must successfully complete the reading and writing placement exams. This means that you must be ready for English 101 to start in Honors. Students who wish to enter the Honors curriculum after completing some college work must have at least a 3.0 GPA in humanities and social science courses and be at least English 101 ready.
Sounds great! Sign me up!
There's one more step: acceptance into the Honors curriculum requires an consultation with one of the Honors faculty.
